The treatment aims to remove or at least to reduce the size of the tumor and get rid of residual tumor cells. Medical treatment will also reduce any complications and relieve the symptoms. The medical profession nowadays can help people to get their health back to complete normality only on rare occasions when lung cancer is present. The problem is these residual cancerous cells stay in the body. The remission stage allows people to feel well, almost like they dont have any diseases or health issues. In this state the patient can live anywhere from a few months up to a full and long life. You can never predict how long this remission will last.

During the process of chemotherapy they use the following medications: cisplatin or carboplatin which breakdown the structure of the tumor cells (the second one has less side effects); vinorelbine, docetaxel or paclitaxel which affect the cancer cell division and prevent them from growing; gemcitabine which prevent cells from reproducing. There are also some new drugs such as Iressa and Tarceva which are collectively called tyrosine kinase inhibitors. They slow down the purpose of a chemical called the epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase, this substance is found on the cell surface and promotes growth
